Should Graham leave the GOP?
While many have pushed for former President Donald Trump to try and run for the White House again, a recently released audio shows that GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham has said President Biden is the “best person” to bring together the country and lead it after the Capitol riot.
“We’ll actually come out of this stronger. Moments like this reset,” Graham (R-SC) can be heard saying on the audio which was originally aired on CNN. “People will calm down. People will say, ‘I don’t want to be associated with that.’”
“This is a group within a group,” he added. “What this does, there will be a rallying effect for a while [where] the country says, ‘We’re better than this.’”
The audio was originally obtained by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns, who have said that the conversation in question happened in a secure room in the Capitol after the Capitol riot.
“Totally, he’ll be maybe the best person to have, right?” Graham answers. “I mean, how mad can you get at Joe Biden?”
Later that day Graham gave a public speech in which he said “Trump and I, we had a hell of a journey.” He added, “I hate it being this way. Oh my God, I hate it. But today, all I can say is count me out. Enough is enough. I tried to be helpful.”
Months after the attack, however, Graham backtracked and started fully expressing support for Trump.
In May 2021, he notably said that Trump is necessary for the Republican Party to “move forward”.
“I would just say to my Republican colleagues, can we move forward without President Trump? The answer is no,” Graham noted during an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity.”
He further added, “I miss Donald Trump,” and “I hope he’s considering running. Let’s start a ‘Draft Trump’ movement. He’s the only guy I think can go to the American people and say, ‘Let me finish what I started. What I did worked.’”
